In order to be able to sense and respond to changes in the light intensity, quality, direction and photoperiod of their environment, plants have evolved photoreceptors.
Light receptors are the key for plants to perceive changes in the external environment. In plant light reactions, the most important light receptors are phytochrome, which absorbs red and far-red light.
Phytochrome is a kind of pigment proteins that can reverse the absorption of red and far-red light, participate in photomorphogenesis and regulate plant development. It is extremely sensitive to red light (R) and far red light (FR), and plays an important regulatory role in the whole growth and development process of plants from germination to maturity.
Phytochrome exists in two stable states: red light absorption (Pr, Lmax =660nm) and far-red light absorption (Pfr, Lmax =730nm). The two light absorption patterns can be reversed in red and far-red light.
Studies on phytochrome have shown that the effects of phytochrome (Pr, Pfr) on plant morphology include seed germination, desiccation, stem elongation, leaf expansion, shade avoidance and flowering induction.
Therefore, the complete LED plant lighting solution requires not only 450nm blue light and 660 nm red light, but also 730 nm far-red light. Deep blue light (450nm) and ultra-red light (660nm) provide the spectrum required for photosynthesis, while far-red light (730nm) controls the entire process from germination to vegetative growth to flowering.
